Something Over There

Something Over There

Imagine you are wandering through a beautiful forest, sunlight filtering through the boughs and leaves of lush vegetation. Of a sudden you come out of the shade into bright sunlight and there stands a rickety bridge that traverses a rushing, rocky stream. On the other side of the water is a dark, scary wasteland but with one glowing object that shimmers in the streaming light. You want that object, you must have it, your life won’t be complete until you have that glistening bauble for your own. But in order to get it you must cross the creek on the old, fragile decaying wood of the tiny bridge. What do you choose? Do you hold your breath and gingerly, step by gentle step, cross the bridge, taking your chance at getting across safely so you can own the shiny object even without knowing what it is but wanting it because it gleams? Or do you look around you at the lush landscape, the beautiful trees, the sheltering shade, the dapple of warm sunlight on your face and realize one more “thing” won’t change the beauty of where you are and that you are where you are supposed to be on your journey through the forest of your life.

There is always something “over there” that you think might improve your life...something that will make you whole. Be it a place, a thing, a person...¦so many of us believe that we will not be complete without something more. Many times the “thing” we covet, desire, yearn for is, perhaps, beautiful on the outside but when we finally grab it, it’s heavy and prickly and when examined closer, rotten on the inside. Yet we leave our good place and walk across that rickety bridge thinking that if we make it across into the unknown and grab the thing we want, we can always get back to where we started and life will be good. Unfortunately, most times, even when we make it across the gap, grab and hold the shiny object, and turn to go back to our wonderful forest, the bridge has collapsed and our lovely landscape has become dark, and unwelcoming. We are left with the “thing” we coveted but now must wander the starkness of this new land, having left behind all that had made our lives beautiful.

Stay in the green, forget the shiny, and bask in the warmth of your light.
